For nearly half a year a Virginia woman had been a lucky winning Mega Millions ticket holder without realising. The fortunate lottery winner found her winning ticket after seeing a news report saying that somebody in her area was still to step forward to receive their $250,000 prize. Luckily for this particular winning lottery ticket holder she found her lucrative ticket, and her lottery prize was claimed just in time.

Lydia Burke of Mechanicsville, Virginia had a winning lottery ticket for the Mega Millions tucked away in a napkin holder in her kitchen and was completely unaware if it’s value until she saw a lottery news story saying that a Mega Millions ticket purchased at the local 7-Eleven was about to expire. She remembered buying a Mega Millions ticket at that store, so she checked the ticket in her napkin holder and sure enough the lucky woman’s ticket was worth a quarter of a million dollars.

According to Virginia Lottery rules, all winning lottery tickets expire after 180 days from the draw. Mrs Burke’s ticket was for the March the 27th 2009 Mega Millions draw nearly six months earlier. Her ticket matched the five main lottery numbers only missing the Mega Ball number to win Mega Millions’ second place prize of $250,000. The winning lottery numbers for the Mega Millions draw in question were 10, 15, 24, 38, 50 and the Mega Ball number was 19. The ticket was set to expire at 5:00 p.m. on September the 24th, just 8 hours from when Mrs Burke claimed her lottery windfall.
