A park in Sunderland is to be given a £2.4 million facelift courtesy of the National Lottery’s Lottery Heritage Fund and Big Lottery Fund. The Edwardian park was awarded the lottery cash to completely regenerate and renovate the site in a project which will take around 18 months.

Barnes Park in Sunderland was built in 1907 during the economic depression of the time to stimulate employment and also to give the people of Sunderland pleasant open space to enjoy away from the industrial city streets and docks. Nearly 3,000 men worked to build Barnes Park into a peaceful area containing a bandstand and a lake with footpaths that wind their way through the park.

Over recent years Barnes Park has slipped from its original beauty but thanks to money from the National Lottery it will be regenerated and restored to its former glory. With cash from the National Lottery the park will be completely overhauled with a new lake bridge, play area, sensory garden, new seating, railings and signs. Historic features such as the canon, bandstand, railings and gates will be restored, and a new cycle path will be installed making Barnes Park as much of a valuable asset to the local community now as it was in the time of King Edward. The gold key which was used to open Barnes Park over a century ago was used to symbolise the temporary closure of the park ahead of the National Lottery funded regeneration work.

Lottery news like this is always welcome as more and more parks and gardens in cities across Britain are being closed, often due to safety and a lack of funds. The National Lottery’s Lottery Heritage Fund and Big Lottery Fund use money from all National Lottery games including; Lotto, Thunderball, HotPicks, Dream Number, Daily Play or any of the numerous National Lottery scratch cards to assist projects around Britain, which without lottery funding often wouldn’t be able to go ahead.
